PPSSPP Texture Modding Tutorial (with uMod)

<> DESCRIPTION <>
In this post, I will show you how to mod PPSSPP v1.2.2 (for v1.3 or newer, go here) and change the textures of it. In this tutorial, I will use Gods Eater Burst for the game, but please note that this tutorial will also work for other PSP games too. So far, we haven't found any PSP games that is not compatible with uMod. This is the same method YukiHerz post at PPSSPP forums.

<> REQUIRED STUFFS <>
- Ninja Ripper (Link)
- PPSSPP v1.2.2 emulator (I've tried the 1.3 version, somehow it doesn't work) (Link)
- uMod 1.x (I reccomend you to use v1 r44) (Link)
- GIMP or Photoshop (I recommend to use GIMP tho, it's much easier, also open-source) (GIMP Link)
- GIMP DDS Plug-in (if you use GIMP) (Link)

<> LET's BEGIN! <>
1. Before we start this tutorial, be sure to change your PPSSPP backend first to Direct3D9 in your settings.

2. After you finished downloading all the required stuffs, start up Ninja Ripper.

3. At the Target Exe section, click the [...] icon and browse for PPSSPPWindows.exe (don't choose the 64-bit version, or it won't work).

4. Below the [  Run  ] button, there's dropdown. Click on it, and choose D3D9 Wrapper.

5. Click the [  Run  ] button, After you click it, PPSSPP will start.

6. Close it, and check your PPSSPP directory. It should have two new files, a _Ripper folder and a d3d9.dll. If you don't have these 2 new files, then you might have missed a step before.

7. Start up uMod.

8. Click Main, and click Start game through uMod.

9. For those who run uMod for the first time, choose Select the game to start, and browse for the PPSSPPWindows.exe file.

10. After PSP starts, run your game iso.

11. Minimize the game and open the uMod again.

12. Assign 3 buttons for the Back, Save, and Next function. I usually used 1, 2, and 3 (not Num1, Num2, and Num3) because they're not assigned as the controls in my PPSSPP configuration. Also check the Save single texture box and determine where to save the textures by clicking Set save directory. The save directory is where the textures will be exported and ready to be edited.

13. After finished setting up the uMod, click Update. And at your PPSSPP screen, a normal texture sign should appear at the top-left corner. If it doesn't appear, then might have missed a step or two before.

14. In your PPSSPP, use Back and Next button to browse the texture you want to export. Use Save to export it. If you press Save, it will export a texture that is highlighted green, like this screenshot below.

15. After all textures are exported, open the save directory and start editing those textures!

16. If you done editing, export it. Remember to change it from RGB (Red-Green-Blue) to BGR (Blue-Green-Red). So blue = red and red blue. To change it, open the Colors menu, and click Hue-Saturation. Choose the R button and change the hue to blue, and also choose B and change the hue to red. It's quite tricky on setting the hue, so do some research to get the best color for the mod.

*For advanced designers : It's recommended to change the colors per layers, not when it's merged. If you haven't merged it yet, use the Master button instead, so the cyan, magenta, etc. colors will also change. And the results will be more blended.

17. Export the edited texture. I usually leave the compression "None" and the format set to "Default".

Compression is for the type of compression that you want to use for the DDS, compressing textures means less file size, but it also gives less quality. Just leave it to None, because WinRAR will also compress the file again at the next step.

Format is used to determine color system like RGB or BGR. Don't use this to change your mod to BGR. I've tried it, and it always gave me a blank transparent image.

18. Zip 'em all!

19. Start PPSSPP through uMod (Just like step 7 - 9).

20. Minimize PPSSPP, and open up uMod. Click Open texture/package button, and browse for you ZIP file.

21. AND YOU'RE FINISH!!! Congrats, you're now a modder!
